Caring Deeply In An Overstimulating World pt. 1

Written by T. McClure and Karen Brown, LCMHC

For a lot of people, life feels fast and intense right now. There's information flowing from every direction, different perspectives everywhere you go, and changes happening with every blink. Even though the sensations aren't physical, they can make us feel overwhelmed and drained.

Our society pushes us to constantly take in new information and media. Although it's important to be informed about the world, it's also important to balance being informed with taking care of yourself.

If you're finding yourself overwhelmed by information, consider the following:

  • Choose when you engage

    • decide specific times to check news or social media, rather than grazing all day

  • Limit the dosage

    • a 10-15 minute check-in can keep you informed without flooding your system

  • Notice your internal cues

    • if your chest tightens, your breathing shortens, or your thoughts start racing, it may be time to step away

  • Replace doom-scrolling with grounding

    • a short walk, a stretch break, or even a few deep belly breaths can help your nervous system reset

It is possible to care deeply without carrying everything, and it is possible to remain engaged without becoming consumed. You are allowed to move at a more gentle pace, to honor your limits, and to practice being compassionate to yourself.
