There’s no question about the amount of grief and devastation that we have experienced collectively over the past year in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. I don’t know about you, but it felt like someone hit the PAUSE button on life. We waited while a Pandemic unraveled in front of us, and there was nothing we could do to stop it. Unquestionably, we are slowly considering returning to life as schools reopen and vaccines roll out. This process, while exciting, may also be causing a little unrest.

Here are some tools to help you create some of your own inner calm

  1. Breathe. The breath is something that we have access to anywhere we go. When we pay attention to our breath, it helps to calm our autonomic nervous system and we can instantly feel calmer. Box Breathing is a simple breathwork technique known to reduce stress and improve mood. Simply breathe in for the count of 4, hold your breath for the count of 4, breathe out for the count of 4, and hold for the count of 4. Repeat this cycle 4 times.

  2. Enjoy nature. You don't have to go on a hike or ride a bike if that isn't something you like to do. Simply go outside and engage with the sunshine and earth at your feet, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Studies show that being in nature reduces stress, cortisol levels, muscle tension, and heart rates (source). If you'd like to find a nearby park or trail to explore, but you aren't sure where to start, this site may be helpful.

  3. Unplug. Set aside a few minutes each day to get away from social media, apps, and electronic devices. (This is exceptionally helpful when you feel anxious.) You may feel more anxious at first, but you will be amazed at the difference it makes.

I'm sure you've also heard that exercise can calm the anxious mind, and that's entirely true. Even the smallest amount of movement can be helpful. My favorite form of exercise is yoga. I would love to talk more with you about it and how it can change your life. If you want to talk more about it, please reach out.
