Valentine’s Day can feel challenging for someone who isn't in a relationship. It often centers around romantic love, and we aren't all in romantic relationships. To make the day more enjoyable for those of us who aren't romantically intertwined, we can focus on attending to our minds, bodies, and social connection. We can transform the day into a celebration of self-care, friendship, and community. Here are some practical strategies rooted in psychology, mindfulness, and wellness to help you feel supported, valued, and joyful this Valentine's day.

Expand your focus: Valentine’s Day can celebrate all meaningful interpersonal connections: family, friends, pets, mentors, and community are all connections to explore.
Create a personal intention: Decide how you want to feel. You may want to feel grateful, energized, relaxed, or something else. Choose activities aligned with that feeling.
Practice gratitude: To shift your attention from "lacking" to "abundance," spend a few minutes listing the people and the moments that make you feel supported, happy, and grateful.
Grounding practices to reduce the societal pressures we're feeling:
Mindful check-in: Before engaging in any social plans, be still and notice your breath for 1–2 minutes. Trace the coolness of the air entering your body as you inhale and the warmth the air exiting your body as you exhale.
Grounding ritual: Hold a meaningful object such as a stone, a photo, or a journal and reflect on how it represents care you give to yourself.
Boundaries beforehand: If social plans feel overwhelming, decide on a stopping point or a signal that you can adhere to to take a quiet break during the day.
Find your intention as you reimagine celebration:
Book a spa session, try a new hobby class, visit a gallery, or go for a restorative hike.
Host a “Galentine’s” or close-friend gathering like a potluck, movie night, game night, or a group walk.
Write a letter to future-you about what you hope to cultivate in the coming year, or start a small creative project like a recipe, poem, or photo journal.
Generate social connections that nourish, not exhaust
Plan intimate activities with people who genuinely support you.
Propose activities with clear start and end times to avoid lingering social fatigue (e.g., brunch from 11–1, followed by a solo activity).
If you’re feeling isolated, consider volunteering, joining a local club, or taking part in a workshop to meet like-minded people.
Normalize mixed feelings
Expect ambivalence: It’s common to experience a mix of feelings. Name and validate these emotions rather than pushing them away.
